Warm air from the vents is one of the most common AC complaints we hear, and it's also one of the widest-ranging in terms of actual cause. Some reasons are a five-minute fix. Others point to something that needs a real diagnostic. Working through the likely causes in order of how common they are can help you know what you're dealing with before you call.
Start with the thermostat and settings
It sounds obvious, but confirm the thermostat is set to "Cool," not "Fan Only" or "Heat," and that the set temperature is actually below the current room temperature. Fan-only mode circulates air without cooling it, and it's an easy setting to bump accidentally, especially with a smart thermostat's touchscreen.
A dirty air filter or blocked airflow
A severely clogged filter restricts airflow across the indoor coil badly enough that the system can't properly cool the air passing through it, and in extreme cases can cause the coil to freeze, which makes the warm-air problem worse rather than better. Blocked or closed vents throughout the house can contribute to the same issue. This is one of the simplest things to rule out yourself.
A refrigerant leak
If refrigerant has leaked out of the system, the AC can't absorb heat effectively, and the air coming through the vents will feel warm or only slightly cool even though the system is running. This isn't something you can top off yourself, refrigerant systems are sealed, and a leak means there's a specific point somewhere in the system that needs to be found and repaired, not just refilled.
A failing compressor
The compressor is what actually pressurizes refrigerant and makes cooling possible. If it's failing or has already failed, the outdoor unit may still run, the fan may still spin, but no actual cooling happens, so the air blowing through your vents will be room temperature or warmer. This is typically one of the more expensive repairs, and depending on the system's age, sometimes the point where a replacement conversation makes more sense than a repair.
Frozen evaporator coil
If airflow has been restricted for a while, whether from a dirty filter, blocked vents, or low refrigerant, ice can build up on the indoor evaporator coil. Once that happens, the system actually cools less effectively, sometimes blowing warm air, until the ice is allowed to fully thaw and the underlying cause is addressed. Running the system with a frozen coil can make the problem worse, so it's worth shutting it off and letting it thaw rather than continuing to run it.
