Furnace Won't Ignite? Here's What's Actually Going On

A furnace that won't ignite is one of the more common cold-weather calls we get, and it's also one of the most misunderstood. Homeowners often assume it's the whole unit failing, when in reality ignition problems usually trace back to one of a handful of specific components. Knowing roughly what's happening helps you describe the problem clearly when you call, and helps you know what's worth checking yourself before anyone comes out.

None of this is a substitute for a real diagnostic, ignition issues can look identical from the outside while having very different causes underneath. But understanding the common culprits means you're not flying blind.

The furnace runs through a cycle but never lights

If you hear the blower motor start, maybe even smell a faint gas odor for a moment, but no flame ever catches, that points toward the ignition system itself: a failed igniter, a dirty flame sensor, or a gas valve that isn't opening correctly. Modern furnaces run through a strict startup sequence, and if any single step doesn't complete correctly within a few seconds, the system shuts itself down as a safety measure rather than keep trying indefinitely.

Nothing happens at all when the thermostat calls for heat

If the furnace doesn't respond at all, no blower, no clicking, nothing, the issue is more likely electrical: a tripped breaker, a blown fuse on the furnace's control board, or a thermostat that isn't communicating with the system. This is worth checking yourself first. Confirm the thermostat has power and is set to heat mode, and check your breaker panel for a tripped switch before assuming the furnace itself has failed.

The furnace lights, then shuts off a few seconds later

This is one of the more frustrating patterns because it looks like things are working. A furnace that lights and then shuts down almost immediately is very often a flame sensor issue. The flame sensor's job is to confirm a flame is actually present after ignition, and if it can't detect one (often because it's coated in a thin layer of residue after months of use), the system assumes something is wrong and cuts the gas off as a safety precaution, even if the flame was actually burning fine.

A blinking light on the furnace itself

Most modern furnaces have a small diagnostic light inside the access panel that blinks in a specific pattern to indicate an error code. That pattern is genuinely useful information, worth noting down (count the blinks, note the pause between sequences) before calling, since it narrows down what a technician should expect to find. The codes vary by manufacturer, so we don't rely on any single universal chart, but having the pattern ready speeds up the visit.

What we actually do about it

We start with the same diagnostic every time regardless of what the symptom looks like: check for power and gas supply, inspect the igniter and flame sensor, and read any stored error codes from the control board. Ignition problems are usually a straightforward fix, a cleaned or replaced flame sensor, a new igniter, once we know which piece actually failed. What we won't do is replace parts on a guess. If a $30 flame sensor cleaning solves it, that's what we'll tell you, not talk you into more.

Is it safe to keep trying to relight the furnace myself?+

For a standing pilot light on an older furnace, relighting per the manufacturer's posted instructions is usually fine. For a modern furnace with electronic ignition, repeatedly cycling the power switch won't help and can occasionally trip additional safety lockouts. If it doesn't light within a try or two, it's time to call rather than keep resetting it.

Does a furnace that won't ignite mean it needs to be replaced?+

Rarely on its own. Ignition problems are usually a single-component fix. Replacement becomes a real conversation when the furnace is old enough that this is one of several recurring issues, not because of one ignition failure by itself.
