Heat pumps work by moving heat from outside air into your home, even in cold weather, which means the outdoor unit's coil can accumulate frost during cold, humid conditions. The defrost cycle is a built-in process that clears that frost automatically, and understanding how it works helps you tell normal operation apart from an actual problem.
What actually happens during defrost
When the system detects enough frost buildup on the outdoor coil, it briefly reverses into cooling mode for several minutes, which sends warm refrigerant to the outdoor coil to melt the frost. During this time, the outdoor fan typically stops, and the system may draw on auxiliary heat indoors to offset the brief pause in normal heating. This is why you might notice steam rising off the outdoor unit (that's the melting frost) and a short dip in indoor heating during a defrost cycle.
How often defrost cycles should happen
Defrost cycles are triggered automatically based on outdoor temperature and coil conditions, not a fixed schedule, so frequency varies with the weather. During cold, humid stretches, more frequent defrost cycles are normal. A system defrosting excessively even during mild weather, or one that never seems to fully clear frost between cycles, points to something else going on.
When defrost cycle behavior signals a real problem
A defrost cycle that runs constantly, ice that doesn't fully clear and keeps building up, or a system that seems stuck in defrost mode longer than a few minutes are all worth having looked at. Common underlying causes include a failing defrost sensor or control board, low refrigerant, or a fan motor issue preventing proper airflow.
