A compressor failure is one of the more expensive AC repairs a homeowner can face, and depending on the system's age, sometimes the point where replacement makes more sense than repair. The good news is that a lot of what shortens a compressor's life is preventable with fairly ordinary maintenance habits.
Keep refrigerant levels correct
Running low on refrigerant, whether from a slow undetected leak or simply never having been properly charged, forces the compressor to work harder and run hotter than it's designed to. Over time, that extra strain contributes directly to premature failure. This is one of the reasons a slow refrigerant leak is worth addressing as soon as it's noticed, not left alone because the system still seems to cool adequately.
Don't ignore electrical warning signs
A failing start or run capacitor forces the compressor motor to work harder to start and run, which accelerates wear. A capacitor is a relatively inexpensive part to replace on its own, catching it early is meaningfully cheaper than letting it contribute to a full compressor failure.
Keep the outdoor unit clear and clean
Debris, grass clippings, leaves, and dirt buildup around the outdoor unit restrict airflow across the condenser coil, which makes the compressor work harder to reject heat properly. Keeping a couple feet of clearance around the unit and having the coil cleaned periodically is a simple, low-cost way to reduce unnecessary strain.
Don't skip seasonal maintenance
A lot of what actually protects a compressor, checking refrigerant charge, electrical connections, and airflow, happens during a proper seasonal tune-up. Skipping maintenance doesn't cause immediate failure, but it does mean small issues go unnoticed until they've had more time to actually cause damage.
Avoid short cycling where possible
Rapid on-off cycling, whether from an oversized system, a thermostat issue, or airflow problems, puts more wear on a compressor over its lifespan than fewer, longer, complete cooling cycles. If your system is short cycling regularly, addressing the underlying cause protects the compressor, not just your comfort.
