A common assumption is that a bigger AC system means better, faster cooling and a safer margin against the Texas summer. In practice, an oversized system usually performs worse than a properly sized one, and understanding why comes down to how cooling and dehumidification actually work.
Why an oversized system is a real problem, not a bonus
An oversized AC cools the air quickly enough to satisfy the thermostat before it's had time to properly remove humidity from the air. That leads to short cycling, frequent on-off cycles that put more wear on components, and a home that feels cool by the thermometer but still humid and clammy. It also means more starts and stops for the compressor, which is harder on the system over its lifespan than fewer, longer, complete cycles.
What actually determines the right size
Proper sizing comes from a Manual J load calculation, an industry-standard method that accounts for your home's square footage, insulation levels, window count and orientation, ceiling height, local climate data, and even things like how many people typically occupy the home. It's a real calculation, not a rule of thumb based on square footage alone, which is how a lot of oversizing happens in the first place.
Why square-footage-only estimates fall short
Two homes with identical square footage can need very different system sizes depending on insulation quality, window efficiency, attic ventilation, and orientation to the sun. A rule-of-thumb estimate based purely on square footage skips all of that, which is exactly how so many homes end up with a system that's larger than what the home actually needs.
What to ask before a new system is installed
It's reasonable to ask directly whether a Manual J calculation was performed for your specific home, rather than an estimate based on the size of the unit being replaced. If a contractor is simply matching the new system's size to whatever was there before, without accounting for any changes to the home (added insulation, new windows, a room addition) since that system was installed, that's worth a second opinion.
