Ductless & Mini Splits

Mini Split Not Working Right? Common Issues Explained

Ductless mini split systems are generally low-maintenance, but because they're a less familiar setup for a lot of homeowners than a traditional central system, unusual symptoms can feel more alarming than they need to be. Most mini split issues fall into a few recognizable categories.

A bad smell when the unit turns on

A musty or moldy smell is usually related to condensation and moisture sitting in the indoor unit, particularly if it's been run in cooling mode for long stretches without regular cleaning. A sharper, more chemical smell can point to mold growth on the coil or filter, or in rarer cases an electrical issue, which is worth having looked at rather than just running the unit with the windows open until it fades.

The unit overheats or shuts off in extreme heat

Mini splits, like all AC systems, have a maximum outdoor temperature range they're rated to operate in efficiently. During the hottest stretches of North Texas summer, a system that's already undersized for the space, has a dirty outdoor coil, or is low on refrigerant is more likely to struggle or shut down as a protective measure. This is different from a system that's properly sized and maintained simply working harder on a 105-degree day.

Blinking lights or error codes on the indoor unit

Most mini split brands use a blinking-light error code system similar to central furnaces. The specific meaning varies by manufacturer, so we always reference the actual brand and model rather than assuming, but noting the blink pattern before calling helps speed up the diagnostic.

Uneven cooling between zones

In multi-zone mini split setups, one indoor unit cooling noticeably less effectively than the others can point to a refrigerant imbalance, a dirty filter on that specific unit, or a problem with that unit's individual expansion valve, rather than an issue with the whole system.

Water dripping from the indoor unit

Similar to central systems, this usually traces back to a clogged condensate drain line or a disconnected drain hose, both straightforward to inspect and clear during a service visit.

Mini Split Not Working Right? Common Issues Explained FAQs

Do mini splits need regular maintenance like central AC systems?+

Yes. The filters need regular cleaning (more often than a typical central-system filter, since they're smaller and see concentrated airflow), and the outdoor unit benefits from the same seasonal attention a central system's condenser gets.

Is it normal for a mini split to run constantly in extreme heat?+

Some increase in runtime during the hottest days is normal and expected, similar to any AC system. Constant running that isn't keeping up with the set temperature at all is worth having checked rather than assumed to just be the heat.
