A lot of homes with central air still have a window unit propped into one bedroom or bonus room that just never seems to cool properly. It's a common, understandable workaround, but it's worth understanding why that room isn't keeping up in the first place, rather than treating the window unit as the permanent solution.
A correctly sized, properly installed system shouldn't leave a cold spot
If a central system was sized using an actual Manual J load calculation and installed with properly designed ductwork reaching every room, there generally shouldn't be a persistent room that the system just can't handle. A recurring problem room is usually a symptom, not a fixed fact about that space.
Common reasons one room won't cool
A duct run that's too long, too narrow, or has too many bends to deliver adequate airflow to that specific room is a common culprit, especially for rooms added on later or located far from the main system. A room with unusually large windows, poor insulation, or significant sun exposure can also simply have a higher cooling load than the rest of the house accounts for. In some cases, the original system itself was undersized for the home's total square footage or layout.
Why a window unit is a workaround, not a fix
A window unit cools that one room independently, which explains why it works, but it doesn't address whatever is actually preventing the central system from reaching that room properly. It also means running two separate cooling systems, with two separate maintenance needs and energy costs, rather than one system working as it should.
What an actual diagnostic looks at
A proper airflow and ductwork assessment for that specific room, checking duct sizing, insulation, and the room's actual cooling load, identifies whether the fix is a duct modification, a supplemental zone, or in some cases confirms the whole system needs to be resized. It's worth getting a real answer rather than assuming the window unit is simply how that room has to be.
