A compressor that's caught struggling early is sometimes salvageable; one that's fully failed usually isn't.
Warm air despite the system running
If the outdoor unit is running, the fan is spinning, but the air from your vents isn't actually cold, a struggling compressor is one of the possible causes, alongside refrigerant issues covered elsewhere.
Loud or unusual noises from the outdoor unit
Grinding, clattering, or a loud humming that wasn't there before can point to worn internal components inside the compressor. Some noise is normal for any outdoor unit, but a distinct change from what's normal for your system is worth paying attention to.
The outdoor unit struggles to start
A compressor that hums for a few seconds before actually starting, or that trips the breaker on startup, is often showing early signs of failure in its start capacitor or the compressor motor itself.
Circuit breaker trips repeatedly
A compressor drawing more current than it should due to internal wear can trip the breaker repeatedly. This is worth treating seriously rather than just resetting the breaker and moving on, since it's often an early sign rather than a one-time fluke.
Visible leaks around the outdoor unit
Oily residue or refrigerant leaks around the compressor housing can point to a seal that's failing, which affects the compressor's ability to maintain proper pressure.
Short cycling
A system that turns on and off in short bursts rather than running a full cooling cycle puts extra strain on the compressor and can be both a cause and a symptom of compressor problems.
The system is old and has had prior refrigerant issues
Compressors that have run low on refrigerant for extended periods in the past are at higher risk of premature failure, since the compressor relies on refrigerant for lubrication and cooling internally. A system with a history of undiagnosed refrigerant issues is worth watching more closely.
