If you've ever turned your AC off and then quickly back on, only to have it seemingly refuse to start, you've run into the 3-minute rule, and it's actually a built-in protection, not a malfunction.
What's actually happening
When an AC compressor shuts off, the refrigerant pressure inside the system needs a few minutes to equalize between the high and low pressure sides. If the compressor tries to restart before that pressure has equalized, it has to work against that pressure difference immediately, which puts a lot of extra strain on the motor and can shorten its lifespan or cause it to trip a safety switch. Most systems build in a short delay, commonly cited as around 3 to 5 minutes, before allowing the compressor to restart after a shutoff.
Why this matters for how you use your thermostat
This is part of why rapidly cycling your system, turning it off and on repeatedly to try to force a fix, or bouncing the thermostat setting up and down quickly, isn't actually helpful and can put unnecessary strain on the compressor over time. If your system seems unresponsive right after being turned off, the most likely explanation is this built-in delay, not a failure.
When it's not just the delay
If your system still won't start after waiting a full 5 to 10 minutes, that points to something beyond the normal restart delay, worth an actual diagnostic rather than continuing to wait it out.
What smart thermostats and modern systems do about this
Many modern thermostats and system control boards have this delay built in automatically, preventing rapid cycling regardless of how quickly you adjust the settings. This is a deliberate design choice protecting the compressor, not a bug to work around.
