During the hottest stretches of a North Texas summer, it's common for a perfectly healthy AC system to struggle to hit the exact temperature set on the thermostat. This isn't always a sign something's wrong, air conditioners are engineered around a specific temperature differential, not an unlimited cooling capacity.
The roughly 20-degree rule
Most residential AC systems are designed to cool indoor air about 20 degrees below the outdoor temperature under normal conditions. On a 105-degree day, that means a realistic indoor temperature closer to 85 degrees under pure physics, before you account for insulation, shade, and how well the home retains cool air. A system straining to hit 72 degrees when it's 105 outside isn't necessarily broken, it may simply be running up against what any correctly sized system is built to do.
Why the thermostat reading and the "feels like" temperature can differ
Humidity plays a real role here too. A home at 74 degrees with high humidity can feel noticeably warmer than the same temperature with humidity properly controlled, since humidity affects how effectively your body dissipates heat. A system that's cooling to the set temperature but not managing humidity well can leave a room feeling warmer than the number on the thermostat suggests.
When it's the heat, and when it's an actual problem
A properly sized, well-maintained system straining somewhat on the hottest days of the year, and getting close to (even if not exactly hitting) the set temperature, is generally expected. A system that's noticeably farther off than that, running constantly without making real progress, or one that used to keep up fine in similar heat and no longer does, points to an actual issue: low refrigerant, a failing component, or airflow restriction, worth having diagnosed rather than assumed to just be the weather.
