Short cycling: rapid on-off cycles
Short cycling means the system runs for a brief period, shuts off, then starts again shortly after, rather than completing a full cooling cycle. Common causes include an oversized system, a dirty air filter restricting airflow, a refrigerant issue, or a thermostat that's malfunctioning or poorly placed (near a heat source, in direct sunlight, or near a supply vent, all of which can give it inaccurate readings).
A system that suddenly stops running entirely
This is a different pattern, and points toward a tripped safety switch, an electrical issue, or a failed component rather than a cycling problem. A system that overheated due to restricted airflow may shut itself off as a protective measure. A tripped breaker, a blown capacitor, or a failed compressor can all cause a sudden full stop rather than a cycling pattern.
What both patterns have in common
In both cases, a dirty filter or restricted airflow is one of the most common underlying contributors, which is why it's worth checking first regardless of which pattern you're seeing. Beyond that, the diagnostic path diverges: short cycling points toward sizing, thermostat, or airflow issues, while a sudden full stop points more toward an electrical or component failure.
Why it's worth addressing rather than ignoring
Both short cycling and repeated sudden shutoffs put extra strain on the compressor and other components over time. What might start as an inconvenience, a system that seems to run a lot without ever getting comfortable, can turn into a more expensive repair if the underlying cause is left unaddressed.
