A musty or mildewy smell right when your AC kicks on is one of the more common indoor air quality complaints we hear, especially in humid North Texas summers. It's a distinct issue from a burning smell (which usually points to something electrical or mechanical) and instead almost always traces back to moisture somewhere in the system.
Moisture on the evaporator coil
The evaporator coil stays damp during normal operation as part of the cooling and dehumidifying process. If mold or mildew develops on that damp surface over time, especially in a system that runs constantly through a humid summer, the smell gets pushed through the ductwork every time the system cycles on.
A clogged or slow condensate drain
Standing water in a condensate line or drain pan that isn't draining properly creates the kind of stagnant, damp environment mold and mildew thrive in, which is a common contributor to a musty smell separate from the coil itself.
Ductwork holding onto moisture
In humid climates, ductwork, particularly ducts running through an attic or crawlspace, can develop condensation on the outside or, in less common cases, moisture intrusion on the inside. Once mold or mildew is established inside the ducts themselves, cleaning the coil alone won't fully resolve the smell.
What actually helps
A proper inspection identifies where the moisture and any mold or mildew growth is actually located, rather than guessing. Depending on what's found, that can mean cleaning the coil, clearing the condensate line, or in some cases a more involved duct cleaning. Running the fan for a short period after the compressor shuts off (many thermostats support this) can also help dry out the coil between cycles and reduce the conditions mold needs to grow.
